Patios, pools, driveways & balconies
Most outdoor tiling failures trace back to one of three things: the wrong tile for the application, falls that don't drain, or waterproofing that wasn't detailed properly. We install across four outdoor applications in Auckland, and the prep work is where the difference shows up.
Patios
Patios fail when water sits on them. We cut falls to drain water away from the house, waterproof where the patio meets the building, and select porcelain or natural stone with a slip rating that suits the patio's use. An entertaining area doesn't need the same rating as a wet edge near a spa. See finished examples in our recent outdoor tiling projects.
Pool Surrounds
Pool surrounds need an R11 slip rating at minimum, full waterproofing at the pool edge, and substrate prep that accounts for constant moisture. The detail at the coping is where most pool jobs leak later. We're Certified Waterproofers and Auckland Council approved PS3 authors, so the waterproofing layer is documented and signed off before the first tile goes down.
Driveways and Pathways
Driveways crack when the substrate isn't rated for the load, and pathways heave when movement joints are missed. We use porcelain pavers built for outdoor use, set on the right bed for vehicle or foot loads, with movement joints positioned to handle Auckland's temperature range. Tile selection runs through The Tile Room, so you're choosing from ranges tested outdoors.
Balconies and Steps
A tiled balcony is a waterproofing job with tile on top. Get the membrane wrong and water reaches the room below. We detail the membrane to PS3 standard, cut falls to the drain or edge, and use slip-rated tile on every tread. BUILT FOR AUCKLAND’S CLIMATE
Salt, UV, rain - accounted for before we tile
Outdoor tile in Auckland faces variables that indoor work doesn't. We spec materials, fixings and joints against the conditions the job will actually see - coast, west sun, building line, or all three.
Salt corrodes cheap fixings and grout
From the North Shore through Whangaparāoa, Omaha and Mangawhai, salt is the variable. We use stainless or marine-grade fixings and pick tile and grout combinations that hold colour and integrity under salt load.
UV and surface heat open up joints
On west-facing patios and pool surrounds, a dark porcelain in full afternoon sun can sit at 50°C, and that thermal range opens up grout and tile if movement joints are placed by default rather than calculated. We size and place perimeter and field joints based on the tile, the substrate and the orientation.
Falls and waterproofing detailed to standard
On balconies and tiled areas against the house, water is the variable. Auckland rain arrives fast and heavy. We cut falls of 1:100 minimum, typically 1:80, to shed water to a drain or edge, and we waterproof to PS3 standard wherever the tiled area sits over a habitable space or meets the building line.
Through-body porcelain holds colour
UV degrades pigmented tile and cheaper sealants. We specify through-body porcelain where colour stability matters, and UV-stable sealants and grouts across the board, so a patio reads the same in year five as it did on handover.
SLIP RATINGS EXPLAINED
Outdoor tile slip ratings, in plain English
Slip rating measures how grippy a tile is when wet. Outdoors, it's one of the first things we spec on a job, because the wrong rating turns a pool surround into a hazard and an over-rated patio into a surface that's hard to clean.
The R-rating system runs from R9 to R13. For outdoor residential work in Auckland, the relevant range is R10 to R12. New Zealand also references the AS/NZS 4586 P-rating system on consented work, and we'll cite both where the spec calls for it.

A few things to know. R10 isn't sufficient for a pool surround even if the tile looks the part. R12 is grippier but harder to clean, so it's overspec for a sheltered patio. And the rating applies to the tile as installed - a polished or sealed finish can change the rating, so the outdoor-specific spec is what matters, not the showroom finish. On every quote we spec the rating against the application. Tile selection then runs through The Tile Room, so you're picking from outdoor-suitable ranges rather than guessing from a showroom that mixes indoor and outdoor stock.
OUTDOOR MATERIALS
Four materials, each behaves differently outdoors
Each material reacts differently to Auckland's UV, rain and salt, and each one suits a different application. Here's how we use them.
Porcelain
The workhorse for outdoor jobs. Dense, low-absorption, freeze-thaw stable, and through-body porcelain holds colour under UV. We use it on most patios, pool surrounds and balconies, and 20mm outdoor pavers on driveways where the tile has to carry vehicle loads. Maintenance is a wash-down a few times a year.
Natural Stone
What we're known for. Every piece is slightly different in size, thickness and pattern, and the install takes more reps to get right than porcelain. Travertine, basalt, bluestone and granite all install differently, and a coastal job needs different sealer than an inland one.
Ceramic
Ceramic absorbs more water than porcelain, so its outdoor use is narrower. We install it on covered, dry outdoor areas — sheltered patios, covered entryways — where standing water and freeze-thaw aren't variables. For exposed areas, we'll point you toward porcelain instead.
Glass
A finish material. We use it on pool walls, pool waterlines and feature panels, mostly as mosaic sheets or accent strips. Colour holds well under UV and maintenance is low, but the install is detail-heavy because alignment across grout lines and joints has to be exact.

On a quote we check three things on the tile spec: slip rating, water absorption, and freeze-thaw rating. Indoor-rated tile fails on at least one of them outdoors, which is the most common cause of cracked, lifted or stained tile within a few years. Every tile range will spec whether it's rated for indoor, outdoor, or both, and we only spec outdoor-rated tile for outdoor jobs.

R11 is the minimum slip rating for pool surrounds and other wet outdoor areas where people are barefoot. R10 is fine for covered patios that stay mostly dry. Yes, in most cases. We assess the existing substrate first for cracks, level, falls and movement. If the slab's sound, properly cured and falls correctly, we can tile directly over it with the right adhesive system. If it's cracked, hollow or doesn't drain, we'll spec the prep work needed before tiling. Tiling over timber decks needs a tile backer board, decoupling membrane and the right adhesive - possible, but more involved than concrete.

We supply and install through The Tile Room. You choose your tile in the showroom; we handle quantities, lead times, delivery and grout colour selection. Sourcing the tile separately is something some clients prefer, and we'll install client-supplied tile too. Most homeowners and builders find the supply-and-install route saves the most time and avoids the most coordination problems.

Our 10-year guarantee covers the workmanship of the installation: the bond, the falls, the layout and the finish. Tile manufacturer defects are covered separately under the supplier's warranty. Waterproofing on consented work is documented under the PS3 we author for council. If something fails inside the guarantee period that traces back to our install, we'll come back and put it right.

A standard residential patio takes one to two weeks once we're on site, depending on size and complexity. Pool surrounds usually take two to three weeks because of the waterproofing detail. Driveways and larger commercial jobs run longer. The biggest variable is usually substrate prep - the install itself is faster on a sound, well-prepped base than on a slab that needs work first.

You'll need a PS3 if your project is consented and the waterproofing forms part of a building element, most commonly on balconies over habitable spaces, decks, and tiled areas tied into the building envelope. We're Auckland Council approved PS3 authors, so the waterproofing is detailed to standard, inspected, and documented for council sign-off. For straight patios, driveways and most pool surrounds, a PS3 isn't required. We'll confirm what your specific job needs during quoting.
